Oh, I thought maybe the more points you got you could upgrade from new member to the next status or whatever.
so how DO you go from new member to something else? what makes someone a senior member or community leader and stuff?

The community member levels change based on post count automatically.

When you register you're a "New Member". Those who post enough are automatically moved to "Community Member" followed by "Senior Community Member". The other titles have special meanings and are set by an admin.

The BPDR Leadership Team currently has 7 Senior Community Leaders, and 7 Community Leaders. We post on the forums like other members, offering feedback on people's topics and working on our own stuff. In addition, we're responsible for looking out for the welfare of this community- handling problems and discussing decisions.
New CLs are invited by the SCL Team from among the established members. Some are later invited to become an SCL after some months or years in the CL role.
I count as being a CL from a leadership perspective, plus I also have technical responsibilities to do with keeping the site and forums working, and trying to improve them.
